Water Planner - Department of Natural Resources

About the Position

This is primarily a regulatory position.  Incumbent serves as the National Flood Insurance Program contact for communities in the northern portion of Indiana. Final ordinances are approved by the Department of Natural Resources. 

Position also assists the Senior Water Planner in developing and conducting floodplain management workshops and conferences.  Should flooding or other natural hazards occur, incumbent provides general technical assistance to the impacted communities, often times touring the affected areas to determine extent of damage in the floodplains.  Assistance is provided to the engineering staff when meetings and open houses are conducted with regard to flood map updates.

Project Engineer Illinois State Water Survey Prairie Research Institute

About the Position

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Project Management Responsibilities:
  • Serve as Project Manager for projects related to surface water resources, including oversight of planning, scheduling, and communicating status/progress with project participants, staff, and leadership.
  • Provide engineering support to meet strict standards and deadlines for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA),
  • Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Studies (FIS).
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on projects, including proposal development and submission, budget and accounting oversight, reporting compliance, and project coordination.
  • Provide technical assistance to GIS staff for preparing tables and graphs and to ensure accurate representation of model information and floodplain mapping
  • Monitor quality assurance and quality control review of maps
  • Conduct searches for hydrologic and hydraulic models and geographic data and metadata; review and compare hydrologic/hydraulic models for applicability
  • Prepare technical reports with scientific results and disseminate information through publications and presentations at professional conferences/symposiums
  • Provide technical support to meet mapping product and report deadlines.
  • Supervise assigned full-time and hourly staff; this includes task assignment, scheduling, ongoing performance monitoring and evaluation, career/position mentoring, and leave/travel approval.
  • Oversee preparation of flood profiles to FEMA specifications.
  • Serve as the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) representative for the Floodplain Mapping Program in reference to inquiries and concerns from the general public, consulting engineers, USACE engineers, community representatives and others, as needed.
  • Attend meetings and assist with coordination of activities with the Office of Water Resources and FEMA.

Coastal Resources Planner

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Lake Michigan Coastal Program Seeks Coastal Resources Planner to Join the Team.

The LMCP provides technical and financial assistance to state, regional, and local partners to protect, preserve and utilize coastal resources. The program also helps coordinate state agency action on coastal management issues. Housed within the Indiana DNR’s Division of Nature Preserves, the Lake Michigan Coastal Program works to enhance the State’s role in planning for and managing natural and cultural resources in the coastal region and to support partnerships between federal, state and local agencies and organizations.   

The Coastal Resources Planner position is responsible for providing coastal management coordination, resources, and assistance to nongovernmental organizations and local, state, and federal stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability of coastal communities. To accomplish this goal, the position

  • supports LMCP Program Enhancement projects that address coastal hazards, wetland protection, and public access to natural and cultural resources, among other coastal issues,
  • educates and informs coastal decision-makers about tools and resources that can be used to incorporate resilience and sustainability into local planning efforts, and
  • works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams both internally and externally to promote conservation design, sustainable development and resilience principles, ordinance development, and natural coastal resource protection.
